LEGISLATION FOR HUMAN TRAFFICKING
Why is Legislation Needed?
In 2020, IHIJC began visiting police departments in Burlington County, to dialogue with them about successes and barriers in fighting human trafficking, and to encourage them to target those buying sex. At each police station, we were told the same thing. The police felt their “hands were tied.” Because buying sex was only a Disorderly Person’s Offense, the offender would get a “slap on the wrist” and be out on the street the same day. The need for legislation that raised the penalty for buying sex was recognized.
